In an age when women are expected to know their place, be submissive, dutiful and chaste, Maggie Dickson, a Musselburgh fishwife, is often in trouble. She’s outspoken, promiscuous and vituperative. While her husband’s at sea, she sells her fish, sleeps with men for pleasure or money and looks after her two children. In time, her husband abandons her. Maggie quits Musselburgh and heads for Newcastle to stay with relatives. [NP] During the winter of 1723, a fisherman finds the dead, naked body of a baby boy. Fingers are soon pointing in the direction of a stranger working in a local tavern, a woman recently estranged from her mariner husband. It is rumoured that she’s been having a passionate affair with the innkeeper’s young son, William Bell, and that he is the father of the dead child. [NP] Maggie is arrested and taken to Edinburgh tollbooth to await trial, is found guilty and is sentenced to death. The news spreads like wildfire and, as Maggie languishes in jail, the whole city speculates whether or not she killed her child. Will she take her secret to her grave? [NP] ‘The Hanging of Maggie Dickson’ is a heartrending tale of obsession and unrequited love.

I stumbled upon this story in a Scottish history group on Facebook. I was fascinated and had to read this novel. It is amazing. It gives a view of Scotland that you do not normally see, one of the lower class. I admired the women described and marveled at how strong they are. Maggie is NOT a heroine of the typical sense. She is a REAL person, a very independent woman who wants what SHE wants and to hell with the consequences. I found myself hating her at times, or just wanting to strike her! The story, of course, leads up to the hanging. It is very emotional and the description of the prison...well, I don't see how Maggie survived. Do not buy this book if you are excepting a Gothic romance or historical romance. It is not a romance, but a story of survival and woman's many mistakes.

well written and fast paced. It is a wonderful insight into life at that time and I cant wait to read more by this great writer.
Sure felt sorry for Maggie, Patrick, and the two kids she had before. They all had tough times. After she died things sure improved for them.
Read all day yesterday. I didn't want to put the book down.I recommend this book. I'm also a history buff and I enjoyed that part of the book too
In her breakout novel, "The Hanging of Margaret Dickson", Alison Butler has given historical fiction lovers
a female character to rival Scarlett 0'Hara! "Maggie Dickson" is beautiful, self-absorbed, wanton, rebellious
and determined to get what she wants no matter the cost. She is willing to flaunt society's mores and pays the
ultimate price, culminating in a conviction of infanticide. Ms. Butler does an excellent job of transporting the reader back
to the harsh reality of everyday life for an 18th Century Scottish fishwife. The reader will have to decide whether
Maggie was guilty of infanticide or wrongly convicted. I await with great anticipation the transition of this book to the
big screen and Ms. Butler's next book!!
A novel based on the life of a real woman in the early 1700s. It includes her fears, joys, and mistakes and has a most unexpected ending. The photos and ephemera at the end are a wonderful addition.
By Steve Ward, author of Test Pilot's Daughter Revenge

I've never been a fan of historical fiction until I found this book by Alison Butler. This is historical fiction like no other. Laid against the backdrop of a small fishing village in coastal Scotland in the 1700s, we have a love story that would rival Romeo and Juliet. Can you imagine a love so strong that you would sacrifice your family, your freedom, your dignity and your very life for a forbidden lover? Can you imagine a love so strong that you would go to the gallows for the young man of your dreams?

Maggie Dickson was a few centuries ahead of her time. She was a bonny lass who would be mastered by no man, not her father, not her husband, not her son, nor any of the men who fell in love with her. No, she would be mastered by no man, not until she met the one she couldn't have, the innkeeper's son, then she gave her life for him. Or did she?

Based on immaculate research and the true story of a hanging gone wrong, The Hanging of Margaret Dickson is a must read.
I am impressed that the author was able to find out so much information about an event that happened so long ago.. I can't even manage to find information on someone from 32 years ago. This story is very well written, I have a hard time believing that this is the author's first book! I felt like I was right there with Maggie throughout the entire book. She sure does inspire many different emotions. Very well done! I would re-read this and I will definitely recommend this to others.
