Soul Winner is a “How-to” manual derived from a series of lectures that Charles Haddon Spurgeon gave to students as Pastors’ College in the 19th century. Arguably, Spurgeon was one of the greatest Christian orators to have ever lived; he’s called the “Prince of Preachers” for a reason. In fact, in the 1800s he preached to a packed house of thousands multiple times a week. Spurgeon won souls for Christ while he was alive and his sermons are still winning souls for Christ more than 100 hundred years after his death. What’s not to learn from an efficacious man like that who has gifted us with a guidebook on how to lead sinners to the Savior?

Although Soul Winner is formally a collection of “lectures,” they read like sermons which are classically Spurgeon: doctrinally sound, piercing, empowering and motivational. With the turn of each page you will discover countless treasures of golden wisdom and practical advice tempered by real-life pastoral experience. Furthermore, each lecture exposits a Scripture verse and tackles one area of soul winning. Examples include (I) “What is it to win a soul?” (IV) “Sermons likely to win souls” (VI) “How to raise the dead” (XI) “The soul winner’s life and work” and (XV) “Encouragement to soul-winners.” What becomes readily clear from the start of this book is that soul-winning is not a means to an end but is one spiritual fruit that results from a person zealous about God and relentlessly committed to personal holiness.

For those seeking an inspirational read on evangelism you can do no better; for preachers seeking a spark to ignite their vigor in exhortation look no further; and for anyone who desires to feel empowered by the Word, then this book is that timeless treasure that you will hold on to and never let go.

It does not matter if you are a layperson, a member of church leadership, a street preacher, a Sunday school teacher or someone somewhere in between. If you are a Christian, you must read this book. God has called all Christians to preach the gospel to the world and win souls. Soul Winner will equip you with methods on how you can fulfill that calling and will certainly induce many professing Christians to engage in this blessed service for our Lord and Savior.

The Soul Winner Charles Spurgeon 9781542657631 Books Reviews

Good for witnessing and also for me filed in some of the gaps for y own salvation. Helps with understanding of the mistakes we can make in witnessing. Typical Spurgeon encouraging supportive tone vs, some works that leave you feeling inadequate. Empowering and confidence building for me.
We are all told to be soul winners. Clergy and laity a like are commanded to go into the world and preach the Gospel to every living creature. This is not a chore, but something we, knowing the mercy of Christ, should be doing willingly, joyfully, thankfully. But many things stand in our way when we try to share the good news of salvation.
This book, a collection of lectures by Rev. Spurgeon, is an excellent summary of how we are to become the kind of Christians God needs us to be in order to use us for saving others. The pitfalls, internal and external, that work against our testimony are reviewed and ways to overcome them are presented.
This is not a book that says, "read them this verse then have them recite this prayer and they will be saved." A book like that would be meaningless...this book tells us how to get our lives right with what God needs so the world will see Christ in us and we can be capable of sharing God's plan of salvation.
I would recommend ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING written by Charles Spurgeon. He speaks to pastors, but any born-again Christian can learn to apply his MEATY lessons. No milk for babes here! I think every pastor should read this to get the insights that you think about and some you may not. There is much to be learned by those of us laypeople also. I would have to go back to my notes to give specifics. Maybe some other time I will add to the review. But at 1152 PM, it is not likely I can do that now. I liked it so much, I went and ordered two more copies to give to my daughter, who is a Sunday School Teacher, as well as a friend who considers himself a pastor and who has led many to the Lord.
In the information age it is easy to get lost in the machine. It is easy to be caught up in programs, and buildings, and fad fixes to common flaws in both our personal walk with the Lord and in the church's mission for Christ. Spurgeon reminds us that it isn't about machines, but men (mankind). It isn't about the next big fad in the church, but consistent concern for the lost. Your website matters less than your prayer life. It took a long time to read this book because every few pages I would clumsily stumble on a timeless truth that I had overlooked or unintentionally abandoned. I will have this book in my library for the rest of my life and refer back to it often. I end my review with an example of the simple, yet profound truth contained within...
"The gospel will be found equal to every emergency; an arrow which can pierce the hardest heart, a balm which will heal the deadliest wound. Preach it, and preach nothing else."
Amazing, amazing book. Beautifully written. So honest, right down to the core of the gospel and man's need to be reconciled to God. Great for anyone who needs the right perspective on the who, what, where, when and why's of sharing the gospel. Highly recommend this for all born again Christians who want tools to help strengthen their understanding of evangelism so that they can share their faith.
If this doesn't light you up to share your faith then you need to check your spiritual pulse. Spurgeons focused exposition and passion shine through in this book. Some of the language is a bit antiquated but it's also very biblical. All in all this is a classic on evangelism for your bookshelf or
I love Charles Spurgeon! This book seems watered down to what I'm accustomed to reading and the print is 8pt font at best. (Very small!) I'm disappointed. No one needs to edit Spurgeon. I encourage anyone interested in his teachings to go to YouTube for free audio sermons and/or look the original publisher up and try to find the original teachings. I know you'll be blessed by it - especially his book on Spiritual Warfare. (Outstanding!)
